It’s a very special day today. Not even an anniversary which comes every year, but a day so special it comes only once every four. It’s Leap Day today and it’s extra special because it’s the gift of time. It’s an extra 24 hours in our life that we can waste or treat as the special occasion it is.

Why give flowers?

Today is Floral Design Day. I have to admit that I have not always been big on getting or giving flowers. The practical part of my nature would think, “Why give flowers?” I thought about other things I could spend the money on or how quickly the bouquet would die. Well, I’ve gotten past that and now I love flowers! My sister-in-law is a floral designer (an extremely talented one too!) and I’ve come to appreciate the art and knowledge involved in putting together an arrangement.

Today is another fun holiday, it’s ‘Love Your Pet Day’. If you’re a pet owner you know exactly what that means to your animal. You know what they enjoy doing most with you. For our dog that means spending as much time as possible outdoors, and the more time spent walking in the woods the better. The really beautiful thing about doing this is the fact that it’s good for both of us; he’s happy and so am I.

With Paczki Day coming up next Tuesday I’ve been thinking fondly of all the years that my family and I feasted on these yummy Polish treats. Every year my dad would bring some home and we would all dive in, fruit filling dripping down our chins. When I was older I wanted to share the joy of eating Paczki with my co-workers so my mom and I would get up at 3 a.m., drive down to Hamtramck and wait in line to get our share of those amazing pockets of yumminess.

Love majormom’s comment on Facebook a few days ago that one of the best ways to de-clutter your home is to stop bringing stuff into it. That means for holidays too! It’s easy to feel like we have to run out and buy gifts for our kids and our honey when Valentine’s Day or Easter roll around. But stop for a moment and think. Do you really need to give a gift? Or two? Or Ten? Can you scale back? Do something different? What else could you do in lieu of popping up to the store and buying a gift? What can you give that won’t clutter the house? Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

Valentine’s Day rolls around and our thoughts turn to love and romance. We start to think about candle-light dinners, long walks on the beach, and talking through the night. Aahhh, that’s love. Of course, the next day life goes back to putting the top back on the toothpaste for him, washing the dishes, getting your work done and figuring out who’s driving which kid where tonight.

When it comes to watching sports in our house I’ve learned that the best thing to do is to toss some food on the coffee table and let the sports fans go. Whether it’s a Saturday afternoon Red Wing game, the Rose Bowl or the Super Bowl, I know that my family and our guests [...]
