It’s a very special day today. Not even an anniversary which comes every year, but a day so special it comes only once every four. It’s Leap Day today and it’s extra special because it’s the gift of time. It’s an extra 24 hours in our life that we can waste or treat as the special occasion it is.

Today is Floral Design Day. I have to admit that I have not always been big on getting or giving flowers. The practical part of my nature would think, “Why give flowers?” I thought about other things I could spend the money on or how quickly the bouquet would die. Well, I’ve gotten past that and now I love flowers! My sister-in-law is a floral designer (an extremely talented one too!) and I’ve come to appreciate the art and knowledge involved in putting together an arrangement.

Today is another fun holiday, it’s ‘Love Your Pet Day’. If you’re a pet owner you know exactly what that means to your animal. You know what they enjoy doing most with you. For our dog that means spending as much time as possible outdoors, and the more time spent walking in the woods the better. The really beautiful thing about doing this is the fact that it’s good for both of us; he’s happy and so am I.

This is it, Super Bowl Sunday is here and the end of football season is upon us. Personally, I’m doing a little happy dance. Those months when both football and hockey season are in full swing leave me a little put off by sports. I don’t hate sports and I can enjoy a good football game or a Red Wing hockey game, but a half dozen games every week gets old.

So when Super Bowl Sunday rolls around I do a little cheer. I am ready to celebrate the fact that football season is over and having a few friends join us on Super Bowl Sunday works. My husband has people who will watch the game and share in his excitement. I have people to talk to about something else – anything else!

Chinese New Year is right around the corner. This coming Monday marks the beginning of this annual celebration of a new year and new energy.

Preparing for this holiday is simple and a great way to get the house in order. You’ll start out by cleaning your house as thoroughly as you can prior to the new year. However, don’t sweep during the first few days of the new year so you don’t sweep out the good luck. Brooms and dust pans should be stored out of sight.

Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. Their meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart. ~ Martin Luther King Jr.

I’ve been talking to people about our “geeky Christmas”. There were many things that happened that made me laugh. For example: During our Christmas visit at my parents house my teenage niece pulled out a dictionary and started asking people to spell words – hard words! We all laughed but the next thing you know we’re having an informal spelling bee. Another time I found myself sharing a joke that is totally based on chemistry.

It’s January 6th and it’s another day of celebration. This is Epiphany, the day the three kings arrived and baby Jesus received his presents. In many traditions this is the day that gifts are given and celebrations are held. If you feel like you’ve lost something in your Christmas season, things were too rushed, or you simply want another chance to celebrate, this is a golden opportunity. It’s also a wonderful time to talk to your kids about the reason you celebrate Christmas and to share stories and your beliefs with them.

It’s December 26th and I know many people are done celebrating Christmas but we’ve only just begun! We have a couple more family Christmas parties and a couple of gatherings with friends to look forward to. However, for this one day we will be turning off Christmas; no parties, no Christmas carols, no holiday dishes, no Christmas of any kind.

Making memories is essentially about planning an event that you, your family, and your guests can enjoy; then relaxing and enjoying it. That’s the best shot you have at making memories ~ at least the kind you want to remember. If you’re stressed or frazzled you’ll make memories too, memories of being unhappy, short-tempered, and [...]
