I’ve heard people say they would like to make their Christmas cards but they just don’t have time. I’ve thought about doing this myself but have stopped because it just feels so overwhelming to make a huge stack of cards. Well, this year I thought I’d do something new and just make one or two cards for special friends. Like you, I have special people in my life who I don’t see as often as I’d like and who I don’t usually see during the holidays. We don’t exchange gifts and when I send them a card I feel like I’m missing something.

October is Family History Month and it gives us an incredible opportunity to share family stories, passing them down from generation to generation so we can preserve family history. As I was making lunch the other day I pulled out my 12 grain super healthy bread and found myself longing for a bologna sandwich on white bread. This isn’t the only food craving I get. Whenever I eat pizza I crave a pop, ditto for popcorn. When I eat a sandwich I long for a glass of cold milk. I noticed these patterns many years ago and realized that those were things I ate together throughout my childhood and teenage years. My mom always made a balanced dinner and served milk to drink, except when she made her homemade pizza. On that night we drank pop. Whenever we made popcorn we had a glass of pop with it. And, of course, there was the entire generation of us who grew up on soft, yummy, white bread.

Whatever the conversation, fun or difficult, large or small, these talks can change your holidays completely. They can shape your decisions. They can change your stress levels. They can alter your traditions.

It’s that time of year again, time to get the kiddies off to school. This is also a time of year when moms get excited about having some routine in their life. Summer is wonderful but the constant ‘fly by the seat of your pants’ mentality can get really old. Personally I’m one of the moms looking forward to a little more routine. Yes, I know that once 3:00 hits things will be crazy with homework, activities and kids jobs, but from 7:30-3:00 I’m in control of my own destiny.

And yet…I don’t want the school days to make our life feel routine.

When I was growing up we spent two weeks every summer at a local campground resort where we met up with my grandparents and our cousins. It was absolutely fantastic and something we always looked forward to.

Now, with kids of my own, I continue a similar tradition where Tom, the girls and I meet up with my brother and his family at a favorite campground. Sometimes other families join in and sometimes it’s just us.

Sometimes our friends and family will just not come on board with our holiday dreams. Sometimes they just can’t see the vision that we have, or maybe they feel like they’ll be left behind. Who knows? Only they know what their real issue is.

But what if you could start designing the holiday you dream of without having to worry about your family’s opinions?
