Love majormom’s comment on Facebook a few days ago that one of the best ways to de-clutter your home is to stop bringing stuff into it. That means for holidays too! It’s easy to feel like we have to run out and buy gifts for our kids and our honey when Valentine’s Day or Easter roll around. But stop for a moment and think. Do you really need to give a gift? Or two? Or Ten? Can you scale back? Do something different? What else could you do in lieu of popping up to the store and buying a gift? What can you give that won’t clutter the house? Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

I’ve been talking to people about our “geeky Christmas”. There were many things that happened that made me laugh. For example: During our Christmas visit at my parents house my teenage niece pulled out a dictionary and started asking people to spell words – hard words! We all laughed but the next thing you know we’re having an informal spelling bee. Another time I found myself sharing a joke that is totally based on chemistry.

Thanks to Emma Fowler for sharing her Christmas poem

Single snowflake falling, falling
Alights upon a blue spruce pine
Laughing voices calling, calling
Skaters gliding in a line.

It’s almost here, just two more days to wait…Thanksgiving. This holiday is special for me. It’s a time when we gather the extended family and simply enjoy each others’ company. It doesn’t have the rush of Christmas, it doesn’t have the spectacle of 4th of July fireworks, it’s simply a gathering. Cousins come from out-of-state, aunts and uncles traverse the highways, and we cart ourselves off to whichever home is hosting this year, pies in hand, ready to celebrate.

I was thinking about past celebrations with my family. On the 8-22-11 radio show I shared the story of one of my birthday celebrations. My absolute favorite part of that day was watching my husband and girls frost my birthday cake. They were so adorable and having so much fun. It was absolutely priceless. The greatest gifts are the simple pleasures.

Perhaps I should have published this a few days ago when the holiday of the day was Bad Poetry Day. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me then. But it’s here now so I’m sharing it with you.
I never claimed to be a poet. In fact, I never write poetry. This just came to me and I had to share it. I take responsibility for releasing it out into the world but I am making the disclaimer that I do not consider it to be poetry or a work of art. I do however deeply believe in the message it proclaims. I also believe that understanding this and using it to your advantage is one of the keys to great happiness in your holidays and every day.

I invite you to read, enjoy, chuckle and then take matters into your own hands.

Seth Godin had a great post with one simple point … each new thing is usually a step in a journey. (Read the post here.) When you are redesigning a holiday, doing things differently, learning new skills and all those other things that go into creating a wonderful life you absolutely love, remember that any [...]

The path to joy is not linear and it isn’t a highway; it will be a unique small trail that fits you perfectly. Your trail may lead through the center of a large city or it may be carved through a dense patch of woods. It might meander and wander in curves and along a stream or it may be virtually a straight line from point A to point B. Your path may be hilly and paved or it may vary from day-to-day, alternating from rocky to grassy to sandy. Sometimes it is wide enough to accommodate a friend walking by your side, other times it will be narrow and you will walk alone. Whatever the destination, whatever the terrain, whether you are walking in a crowd or on your own, this is your journey.

Have you guys been taking advantage of the fun and silly holidays? Have you used them to create more fun or more meaning in your life? Trust me, being silly and having fun is so worth the time. I know you’re busy. I know you have 1000 things to do today and a real holiday or celebration to prepare for. But what is all of that work for anyway? Isn’t it so that you can enjoy your life and help others do the same?
