It’s a very special day today. Not even an anniversary which comes every year, but a day so special it comes only once every four. It’s Leap Day today and it’s extra special because it’s the gift of time. It’s an extra 24 hours in our life that we can waste or treat as the special occasion it is.

Today is another fun holiday, it’s ‘Love Your Pet Day’. If you’re a pet owner you know exactly what that means to your animal. You know what they enjoy doing most with you. For our dog that means spending as much time as possible outdoors, and the more time spent walking in the woods the better. The really beautiful thing about doing this is the fact that it’s good for both of us; he’s happy and so am I.

Now that the big day has passed, the to-do list is torn up, and gifts have been opened, it’s time for vacation. The kids are out of school, you and your hubby have some vacation time, and you’re wondering what to do during Christmas break. I know moms everywhere are pulling out craft projects, games and ‘field trips’ to keep the kids happy and occupied. But what about you? And what about that great guy you married? Are you planning to spend some time with your husband, time for just the two of you?

The holiday season is traditionally one of the busiest times of the year. It’s also a time when holiday stress rears its ugly head and people are wondering how to avoid holiday weight gain. Everyone is on the lookout for simple ways to stay healthy and reduce holiday stress while still having fun. My advice is simple: eat, drink, and be merry.

Eat:

Eat a healthy snack at home before attending an event; you’ll be less likely to pile up the high fat, high calorie foods that prevail at this time of year.

I commented on one of Cindy Ashton’s posts on FB the other day where she made the comment that anyone could sing. I made a joke about how anyone might be able to sing but that doesn’t mean people will listen, and certainly not to me. My friend Judy Davis posted the fact that it’s National Fast Food Day today and wondered why we would celebrate something that has no nutritional value. And let’s face it, most of us know that and yet we find ourselves succumbing to the temptation to grab something quick and easy, especially when we are busy. [...]

I was sitting here working like crazy and feeling a little blah. I ignored the feeling and kept on going, after all today is a very busy day and I must get everything on my to-do list done (and hopefully a little bit more). After a while the blah feeling started to become oppressive so I finally stopped long enough to pick my head up and look around. As I looked around my office I noticed a little light peeking in around the curtains and I started to wonder what the weather was like outside.

You may have heard me talk about my new goal for this holiday season. Actually I have a couple and they both came from interviews I’ve done with some fabulous ladies. The one I’m sharing here has to do with shopping for Christmas presents and it was inspired by my October 10th Heart Filled Holidays radio show where I interviewed Lane Jordan about her forthcoming book 12 Steps to a More Organized Christmas and Holiday Season. During the interview Lane said that she tries to get all of her Christmas chores done before Thanksgiving, leaving more time in the month of December to do meaningful activities.

Yesterday morning I was going through my usual routine; I worked a while then had breakfast with my kids and got ready for the day. I decided to work out of the house and went up to Panera. A smoothie sounded really good and, since I was getting something anyway, I decided to get a pumpkin muffin (I just love those things!). I sat in my booth and ate my food while doing a bit of work. By the time I was done I realized I had just consumed over 800 calories when I wasn’t even hungry! I took a perfectly happy body, over-filled the stomach and added a lot of unnecessary calories that made me feel yucky.

Twice in the last three weeks I’ve actually had to stop my truck and honk at birds to get them to fly out of harm’s way. It amazes me that they’ve gotten so used to vehicles that they don’t get out-of-the-way, especially when instinct should tell them that something this big could hurt them.
