On the 7-11-11 Heart Filled Holidays radio show, Lori Irwin of Virginia Saves joined our Christmas in July discussion with great tips and advice for simple and fun things we can do this summer to create a better Christmas. On the June 6, 2011 Heart Filled Holidays show we were talking all about creativity. When we got to Christmas Corner we ran out of time to cover some of the creative solutions to common problems so, as promised, I’ll be posting them here in the blog. This is the first installment and it’s all about holiday travel. I know it can be expensive to travel so here are just a few creative ideas to get you started on finding some alternatives. When I was growing up we spent two weeks every summer at a local campground resort where we met up with my grandparents and our cousins. It was absolutely fantastic and something we always looked forward to.

Now, with kids of my own, I continue a similar tradition where Tom, the girls and I meet up with my brother and his family at a favorite campground. Sometimes other families join in and sometimes it’s just us.

We’ve been talking about Easter on the radio show and that includes vacation time. I know many of you will take a vacation and celebrate Easter away from home. As I chuckled my way through ‘Confessions of a Packaholic’ it reminded me of a trip Tom & I took to England. We were living in Germany at the time and our first child was only 7 months old. We decided to spend 2 1/2 weeks touring England and Scotland.

And that is what Thanksgiving is all about, being grateful for all the blessings in our life and simply saying thank you. It’s easy to get caught up in the hassle of travel, the cleaning and the cooking. It’s easy to get stressed out and worried about “everything going right”. But the fact is that, at the end of the day, the food will have been eaten, the house will be messy and the guests will have come and gone.

Pavlov’s kids take to the road

Traveling with kids is always interesting. We’ve had a variety of experiences over the years but mostly we’ve dealt with driving in the car. As I talk to other parents I realize we generally have a pretty good experience with our kids in the car. As I look back I think I’d attribute a lot of that to conditioning and the “car bag”.
