Spring in Michigan is one grand roller coaster ride. In the last 30 days we’ve experienced temperatures ranging from 29 degrees F to 82 degrees F. We’ve had sun, snow, rain and fog. We’ve been very fortunate not to have any damaging weather and, for that, I am grateful.

But as I do my daily wondering about ‘what to wear today’, and while I do my semi-annual closet cleaning, I find myself in a state of flux. I am constantly rotating clothes from spring, summer and winter wardrobes. Not surprisingly, I’ve discovered that layering is the easiest and safest choice for dealing with all the temperature changes and the differential from indoors to out (many days it’s actually colder inside the house than outside).

What’s the point of this meandering post on wardrobes and weather?

I’ve come to realize there are 2 kinds of gifts. There are “wow factor” gifts. These are the gifts that get a great immediate response. As soon as they are opened the recipient is thrilled and we get smiles and hugs and maybe even a happy dance from them. Then there are “delayed appreciation gifts”. These are the gifts that get a subdued response upon opening but, over time, they become loved and greatly appreciated. (Of course there are the real flops but we won’t go there today.)

I went out hiking this morning with my fabulous new hiking boots. They’re just wonderful and so much better than my old pair – except that they were hurting the front of my ankles. I have thin ankles and the boots have a connected tongue so all the extra was bunched up and pressing on my leg. [...]

I went to Panera Bread with my daughter last night and we ordered 2 fountain drinks. I stood there pulling and pulling on those 2 cups trying to pull them apart. No matter how hard I pulled I couldn’t get them apart. Since this wasn’t working I decided to try another strategy. I stuck my fingers between the two cups and tried prying them apart that way. Nothing was working.

I was at the optometrist’s office yesterday while my daughter was choosing new eyeglass frames. I kept taking down frames that I thought she would like and she kept rejecting them. After this went on for a while I finally started asking questions. And when I listened I learned a lot.
