Perhaps I should have published this a few days ago when the holiday of the day was Bad Poetry Day. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me then. But it’s here now so I’m sharing it with you.
I never claimed to be a poet. In fact, I never write poetry. This just came to me and I had to share it. I take responsibility for releasing it out into the world but I am making the disclaimer that I do not consider it to be poetry or a work of art. I do however deeply believe in the message it proclaims. I also believe that understanding this and using it to your advantage is one of the keys to great happiness in your holidays and every day.

I invite you to read, enjoy, chuckle and then take matters into your own hands.

My daughter hit the nail on the head a few weeks ago. We got in the truck to go somewhere and it was hot from sitting in the sun. She started to complain then looked at me and said, “And in a few months we’ll be complaining because we’re cold. Maybe I should enjoy the heat now.” Bingo! That’s it! One simple way to be happier is to choose to enjoy things even if you need to shift your mindset or your circumstances a bit to do it.

A mom’s life is wonderful and full, sometimes too full. Sometimes we find that our to-do list and our commitments are outstripping our energy or just taking more hours than we have in the day. We often notice this when holidays or special events pop up because there just isn’t any room left to make them happen much less enjoy them. Well, the good news is that there are things you can do and I’ve posted an article that can help over on Bizymoms so pop on over and read it here (click through to the blog for the live link).

Where did all my money go?

The question is “Who spends all the money?” Well ladies, it’s us. Women make 95% of family financial decisions. I don’t think any of us are really all that surprised by this statistic. If we just eavesdrop on our own conversations with our girlfriends we’ll hear just how that money gets spent too. And while we’re listening we just might get an earful about budgets and savings and debt. We might hear about frustrations when what we want to do clashes with what we feel we can afford.

The other day I experienced one of those blinding-flash-of-the-obvious moments. It had been really hot and humid so we had been running the air conditioning for several days. Then, in the early afternoon, I went out to run some errands…and it was gorgeous! It was 76 degrees and sunny with a nice breeze. And here we had spent the morning inside the house, complaining that it was kind of warm in there, when we could have opened the windows and enjoyed the wonderful weather.

Today is ice cream soda day. When I first saw that I went, “Oohh! Ice cream would be yummy”. Then, a minute later, I realized I didn’t really want ice cream.

When I read the words ‘ice cream soda’ an image flashed through my mind. It was me and my hubby wandering around downtown with our ice cream cones. We were laughing and having fun. That’s what I wanted, the fun and happiness in the image that flashed across my mind; not ice cream.

When I took our dog to the vet for his spring check up a couple of months ago he was a bit heavier than we like him to be. Of course, we wanted him to lose some weight, but we didn’t want to do anything drastic, so we started talking about the exercise he got and what he was eating. During that conversation we discovered that mom was feeding him level scoops of food and everyone else was letting it mound over the top of the scoop. So we decided to simply level the scoops again and also to recommit to his daily trail walks/runs.

On the June 6, 2011 Heart Filled Holidays show we were talking all about creativity. When we got to Christmas Corner we ran out of time to cover some of the creative solutions to common problems so, as promised, I’ll be posting them here in the blog. This is the first installment and it’s all about holiday travel. I know it can be expensive to travel so here are just a few creative ideas to get you started on finding some alternatives. I’d love it if you’d add your own ideas so we can spread the wealth!

As I was cleaning out my sideboard this weekend I noticed that my candle collection had candles in two different shades of red. One was a bright and cheery Christmas red and the other was a little deeper and more of a mulberry. Both are red. Both are pillar candles. And yet, that slight nuance, that minor difference changes everything.

Yesterday I ran my first 5k race. My daughter had signed up for Girls on Track which is a program for middle school girls (Girls on the Run is the elementary school version) that is designed to get them running while building self-esteem and hopefully begin a love of activity.

The girls have been training and doing other fun activities and it all culminated in a 5k run. We were supposed to arrive at the race by 5:00 with opening ceremonies at 6:00 and the race starting at 6:30. The only problem was that it was about 45 degrees and raining.
