I saw an article on the web last week which was debunking fitness myths. One of the myths they mentioned was that you had to work your abs really hard in order to be able to see them. Apparently that’s not true; what really needs to happen is that we need to get rid of the fat that is covering them up. No matter how hard you work your abs, if they’re covered in a layer of fat then you’ll never see them.

I could ignore that little tidbit because, quite frankly, I have no need to see my abs. But the truth still applies, just in a different way. We run into the same myth when it comes to enjoying our holidays; we believe that if we just work hard enough and employ enough time management techniques, enough self-discipline, and enough organization, that we will be completely overjoyed. If we do everything just right we’ll be able to say, “I love my holiday!”

I was reading an article in the local paper about the impact of small changes. While they were talking about the environment it got me to thinking about our own environment. Think about this for a minute; if you come home from work and the house is trashed, the laundry is piled to the ceiling and there isn’t anything to eat, how do you feel? You get to decide what traditions you celebrate. You get to choose who to listen to and who to ignore. You choose how you look at things and what you think about. It really is up to you whether to be happy or not.

I made a joke about how anyone might be able to sing but that doesn’t mean people will listen, and certainly not to me. I was being funny and poking at my singing ability but she had an interesting response.

My daughter hit the nail on the head a few weeks ago. We got in the truck to go somewhere and it was hot from sitting in the sun. She started to complain then looked at me and said, “And in a few months we’ll be complaining because we’re cold. Maybe I should enjoy the heat now.” Bingo! That’s it! One simple way to be happier is to choose to enjoy things even if you need to shift your mindset or your circumstances a bit to do it.

Today is ice cream soda day. When I first saw that I went, “Oohh! Ice cream would be yummy”. Then, a minute later, I realized I didn’t really want ice cream.

When I read the words ‘ice cream soda’ an image flashed through my mind. It was me and my hubby wandering around downtown with our ice cream cones. We were laughing and having fun. That’s what I wanted, the fun and happiness in the image that flashed across my mind; not ice cream.
