You may have heard me talk about my new goal for this holiday season. Actually I have a couple and they both came from interviews I’ve done with some fabulous ladies. The one I’m sharing here has to do with shopping for Christmas presents and it was inspired by my October 10th Heart Filled Holidays radio show where I interviewed Lane Jordan about her forthcoming book 12 Steps to a More Organized Christmas and Holiday Season. During the interview Lane said that she tries to get all of her Christmas chores done before Thanksgiving, leaving more time in the month of December to do meaningful activities.

I was thinking about past celebrations with my family. On the 8-22-11 radio show I shared the story of one of my birthday celebrations. My absolute favorite part of that day was watching my husband and girls frost my birthday cake. They were so adorable and having so much fun. It was absolutely priceless. The greatest gifts are the simple pleasures.

Perhaps I should have published this a few days ago when the holiday of the day was Bad Poetry Day. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me then. But it’s here now so I’m sharing it with you.
I never claimed to be a poet. In fact, I never write poetry. This just came to me and I had to share it. I take responsibility for releasing it out into the world but I am making the disclaimer that I do not consider it to be poetry or a work of art. I do however deeply believe in the message it proclaims. I also believe that understanding this and using it to your advantage is one of the keys to great happiness in your holidays and every day.

I invite you to read, enjoy, chuckle and then take matters into your own hands.

The path to joy is not linear and it isn’t a highway; it will be a unique small trail that fits you perfectly. Your trail may lead through the center of a large city or it may be carved through a dense patch of woods. It might meander and wander in curves and along a stream or it may be virtually a straight line from point A to point B. Your path may be hilly and paved or it may vary from day-to-day, alternating from rocky to grassy to sandy. Sometimes it is wide enough to accommodate a friend walking by your side, other times it will be narrow and you will walk alone. Whatever the destination, whatever the terrain, whether you are walking in a crowd or on your own, this is your journey.

With the 4th of July coming up this weekend is a great time to do something together. You can make it historical and visit a museum or historic village. You can make it crafty and create your own party decorations for Monday. You can make it zany and design some fun activities and games to [...]

I was just talking about using holidays to add more fun to your life and it reminded me of a great homemade holiday we celebrated when I was a kid. Every summer we went camping with my grandparents and my cousins. We had a ton of fun and several traditions that added to the camp experience.

As I was cleaning out my sideboard this weekend I noticed that my candle collection had candles in two different shades of red. One was a bright and cheery Christmas red and the other was a little deeper and more of a mulberry. Both are red. Both are pillar candles. And yet, that slight nuance, that minor difference changes everything.

Sometimes we’re looking for something to do in order to celebrate a holiday or a special occasion. We are looking for an event or activity that will be fun, bring meaning or create some great memories.

A simple solution is to tweak something you’ve done before. Think back on past holidays and celebrations and remember the things you did before that got you what you’re looking for now. Then change it up a bit to fit the current holiday.

On one of the Heart Filled Holiday radio shows I mentioned that my parents go on a first day of spring picnic every year. This sounds lovely until you realize they live in Michigan so that falls around the 3rd week of March – definitely not nice weather for a picnic.

This year they were supposed to be at our house last Sunday, the first day of spring. Unfortunately they had to cut their visit short, but my dad bribed my daughter into making sure we all went on the picnic anyway. I can’t say that the idea of piling everyone into my truck and trying to eat in the truck sounded very appealing. However, my dad is a smart man and he picked the right person to put in charge of this mission.

When people come to work with me we start with changing things around so they can enjoy their holidays more fully. Along the way they begin to discover that this is just one piece of a larger journey, one that lets them live the life they dream of.

Everyone’s dreams are different but they have the common themes of happiness and meaning. Really those two items go hand-in-hand because knowing we make a difference gives most of us joy.
