I was reading an article in the local paper about the impact of small changes. While they were talking about the environment it got me to thinking about our own environment. Think about this for a minute; if you come home from work and the house is trashed, the laundry is piled to the ceiling and there isn’t anything to eat, how do you feel? If you come home from work to a tidy house and a hot meal, how do you feel?

Perhaps I should have published this a few days ago when the holiday of the day was Bad Poetry Day. Unfortunately it didn’t occur to me then. But it’s here now so I’m sharing it with you.
I never claimed to be a poet. In fact, I never write poetry. This just came to me and I had to share it. I take responsibility for releasing it out into the world but I am making the disclaimer that I do not consider it to be poetry or a work of art. I do however deeply believe in the message it proclaims. I also believe that understanding this and using it to your advantage is one of the keys to great happiness in your holidays and every day.

I invite you to read, enjoy, chuckle and then take matters into your own hands.

What do you do when you receive a gift? Do you say, “Oh, you shouldn’t have” or “Don’t waste your money on me”? Do you set it aside to open later? Or do you allow yourself to experience the real joy of receiving a gift?

Today is ice cream soda day. When I first saw that I went, “Oohh! Ice cream would be yummy”. Then, a minute later, I realized I didn’t really want ice cream.

When I read the words ‘ice cream soda’ an image flashed through my mind. It was me and my hubby wandering around downtown with our ice cream cones. We were laughing and having fun. That’s what I wanted, the fun and happiness in the image that flashed across my mind; not ice cream.

As I was cleaning out my sideboard this weekend I noticed that my candle collection had candles in two different shades of red. One was a bright and cheery Christmas red and the other was a little deeper and more of a mulberry. Both are red. Both are pillar candles. And yet, that slight nuance, that minor difference changes everything.

After my run the other day I stopped to stretch. I was leaning over, looking at the ground and saw a four-leaf clover! I was so excited that I leaned right over to pick it and discovered something – it was really 2 three-leaf clovers. One was sitting over the other allowing one leaf from the bottom clover to peek through.

As I was opening a new box of tea bags I thought how cool it would be to grow a tea garden – tending plants which you could later use to create your own tea. Then I realized that I don’t like to garden. So why would I think growing my own tea would be fun?

Spring in Michigan is one grand roller coaster ride. In the last 30 days we’ve experienced temperatures ranging from 29 degrees F to 82 degrees F. We’ve had sun, snow, rain and fog. We’ve been very fortunate not to have any damaging weather and, for that, I am grateful.

But as I do my daily wondering about ‘what to wear today’, and while I do my semi-annual closet cleaning, I find myself in a state of flux. I am constantly rotating clothes from spring, summer and winter wardrobes. Not surprisingly, I’ve discovered that layering is the easiest and safest choice for dealing with all the temperature changes and the differential from indoors to out (many days it’s actually colder inside the house than outside).

What’s the point of this meandering post on wardrobes and weather?

Today’s post is reprinted with permission from Ann Quasman’s last Woman Talk Live newsletter. Her advice is especially important when we get all caught up in the extra-long to-do lists we are plugging through before any holiday or celebration.

“The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it.”
~ Sidney J. Harris

I don’t know if anyone else can relate to this or not. I have a “to do” list that looks several miles long. Even if I lived for another 150 years, the stuff on the list would probably not get done unless I immediately hire a staff who takes care of all of the details.

When people come to work with me we start with changing things around so they can enjoy their holidays more fully. Along the way they begin to discover that this is just one piece of a larger journey, one that lets them live the life they dream of.

Everyone’s dreams are different but they have the common themes of happiness and meaning. Really those two items go hand-in-hand because knowing we make a difference gives most of us joy.
