If you’ve ever heard me speak you probably know how much I love Cookie Day (the day that my girls and I bake our Christmas cookies). What you may not know is what cookies we bake that day. I used to be a little embarrassed to tell people about it because it didn’t seem very festive. But, since you’ve stopped by the blog I’ll confess: the truth is that we usually bake only 2 kinds of cookies; chocolate chip and sugar cookies.
Yes, that’s it. I know it’s not terribly exciting considering all the possibilities in the cookie world, but those are the 2 kinds of cookies we love.
So there you have it, my dirty little secret, we like chocolate chip cookies for Christmas. What do you think? Are we wrong to stock up on chocolate chip cookies? Should we be expanding our horizons or sticking with tradition?
Sandy,
I had to laugh – at myself – when I read your post. I am here to confess that I have been a cookie snob (for decades!!).
I am the one who asks people what cookies they are baking for Christmas and when they say “Chocolate chip”, I always feel a little let down.
Here’s why: I come form a long line of bakers – very good bakers. My paternal grandparents and maternal great-parents all came from Poland and they loved their baked goods. As I grew up in the 1950’s, people still baked from scratch and used real butter. Collecting and baking holiday cookie recipes was a tradition in my family (Icontinue to do it, btw). We still debate the merits of Butterball cookies versus Mexican Wedding Cookies !!
I remember hours of cookie baking right before Christmas (there had to be enough to last through the 12 days of Christmas winding up festivities on January 6th, the Epiphany). Chopping nuts and sticky candied fruit, rolling cookies hot from the oven in powdered sugar, the sweet smell permeating the house, and tinning up pounds and pounds of cookies are all part of my wonderful memories.
But they are MY wonderful memories. Every family creates their own memories and that is what is important. The truth is, whatever you bake with your children will be their wonderful memories. So chocolate chip or Butterballs – it’s all good!!
